Messages From a Forgotten Troopship (24 min.)

In the 1960s, it took almost three weeks to cross the sea from America to Vietnam. The General Nelson M. Walker was one of those ships, and we hear from a few of the soldiers who traveled on it.  Through found tape and contemporary interviews, we recreate the troopship experience and capture the moments outside of combat—three weeks there, and, for the lucky ones—three weeks back.  These stories were produced in partnership with The Vietnam Graffiti Project.

A tribute, in their own words.  Hopes & fears laid down on tape, green & raw before the battles.  Remembrances, wistful, thoughtful, tinged with pride and sadness, spoken long after the bodies had come home.

Stories by and about the sacrifice of the Americans who went off to the nation's most unpopular war; the families who supported and loved them; and the public who sometimes didn't understand them.

Personal stories about an intimate experience.  By turns funny and painful.  Poignant.

Most painful was hearing the troops being brave about the future in the face of the unknown.  And knowing the end of the tale in many cases.  And hearing the voices of those closest to their hearts.
