#PodcastsWorthHearing : The Quartet: Orchestrating the Second American Revolution, Joseph Ellis
Historian, Biographer, award-winning Writer Joseph Ellis leads us on an extremely joyful podcast puncturing many of the popular myths surrounding the Constitution's founding moments as he discusses this, his 12th book.
In this entertaining and fast-paced talk and subsequent Q&A, Ellis skewers many politically sacred cows:
- the second amendment & original intent (the states intended militias)
- the unanimity of the founders on religion or taxes
- no one but these four, the Quartet, envisioned anything other than an EU-style government
- the phrase "We the People of the United States of America..." was something completely different in the original drafts, because of the editing of one man, Gouverneur Morris
All in all, this is an extremely entertaining and enlightening listen for history buffs that demonstrates how myth as much as fact has shaped our national politics. I look forward to a joyful and thought-provoking read.
